GIRLI

The original pop icon. Take a trip into Girli’s world.

“In my lyrics I am able to become the main character. I want to tell a narrative portraying all the thoughts and emotions raving through my head”

Your lyrics explore themes such as feminism and sexuality in a very honest and real light. What inspires you to write so openly about these things?
I write about my own real life experiences, feelings, thoughts and emotions. My parents are actors and so I grew up being surrounded by performance, poetry and creative expression and was always encouraged to express this, so these topics come about very easily for me.

Love the new EP Ex Talk. The, ‘Has Been’, video looks insane! What was the creative process like for you for the EP and video?
Ex Talk came from feeling heartbroken, rejected, angry and it was my way of putting a big middle finger up to everyone who hurt me and embracing that, ‘I’m still here bitches!’. I made it with a small circle of friends who are producers, writers and musicians and so it was almost a source of therapy writing the songs and making the video in itself.

“My vunerability as a young, feminist and queer woman who suffers from up and down mental health and self esteem is important for me to communicate through my lyrics”

Would you say that fashion and style is something you feel is important to your identity as Girli?
Definetly! But i would say i am equally inspired by film, music videos, zines and comic books. Right now i am also loving being much more immersed and invloved in the visual aspect of Girli - with things like my artwork, music videos and my own personal image.

Do you feel in a sense that GIRLI is almost an, ‘alter ego’,  for you? If so, how did this develop and come about?
Yes and no. I find it hard to separate sometimes because GIRLI is my wholelife, but its healthy to step out of my skin and just be Milly too. I have a song coming out called, “I don’t like myself”, which is all about the pressures of social media and the ways in which this affects me and the ways in which i view my body, and compare myself to other people. I think i summed up those feeling perfectly on my new song.
